New strategy outlines steps to accelerate research, innovation, and commercialization of fusion power by the mid-2030s.
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) released its Fusion Science and Technology Roadmap this month, outlining its coordinated national plan to accelerate the responsible development of fusion energy with the goal of achieving commercial power by the mid-2030s. Built on a “Build–Innovate–Grow” framework, the plan aligns public investment and private innovation to strengthen the nation’s energy grid, manufacturing base, and scientific leadership.
“The Fusion Science and Technology Roadmap brings unprecedented coordination across America’s fusion enterprise,” said Energy Under Secretary for Science Darío Gil. “For the first time, DOE, industry, and our National Labs will be aligned with a shared purpose—to accelerate the path to commercial fusion power and strengthen America’s leadership in energy innovation.“
Developed in discussion with more than 600 experts, the roadmap identifies six key research areas—including materials, plasma systems, and plant engineering—and emphasizes collaboration across national laboratories, universities, industry, and joint partners.
